What credentials should I verify when choosing a dentist?

Check that the dentist is licensed by the Utah Dental Board and that any specialty training—such as cosmetic dentistry or endodontics—is documented with board certification or recognized postgraduate programs. Look for continuing‑education participation, which shows a commitment to staying current with techniques and safety standards.

How can I tell if a dentist is suitable for my child's needs?

Ask about the dentist’s experience with pediatric patients, the office’s child‑friendly environment, and the use of behavior‑management techniques such as tell‑show‑do. Reviews that mention gentle handling and short wait times are good signs. Confirm that the practice accepts your child’s insurance and offers preventive services like sealants and fluoride treatments.

When should I see an oral surgeon instead of a general dentist?

General dentists handle routine cleanings, fillings, and minor tooth‑related issues. An oral surgeon is needed for more complex procedures such as wisdom‑tooth extraction, jaw reconstruction, or treatment of severe infections that require anesthesia beyond what a dentist can provide. Your dentist can refer you when specialist care is appropriate.
